Abstract

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov is rightly considered to be the founder of true historical painting. The significance of Surikov as a genius visionary of the past for Russian society is enormous and still insufficiently appreciated and understood. That is why the reference to Surikov's art is especially important today, since the historical painting has practically disappeared from contemporary art exhibitions as a genre, and so the tradition of its creation is dying away.Between 1878 and 1888, Surikov painted three of his best and most famous pictures: Morning of Streletsky Execution, Menshikov in Berezov, and Boyarynya Morozova. All of them are united by their semantic content and historical time (17th - early 18th centuries), forming a trilogy. From the painting The Morning of Streletsky Execution the genuine 17th century, menacing and merciless, looks at the audience from the canvas, and in its power and tragic expressiveness Boyarynya Morozova is Surikov's and the entire Russian historical painting's unsurpassed masterpiece. The painting "Conquest of Siberia by Yermak" was presented at the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the conquest of Siberia, and the painting "Suvorov's crossing of the Alps" was also accidentally presented on the official date - the centenary of Suvorov's Alps campaign. The most difficult creative fate was with the painting "Stepan Razin".
